Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hai holds a MSc. and a Ph.D. in Economics from the Johns Hopkins University (USA), and a MSc in Mathematics from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville (USA). In 2015, he joined the Department of Economics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong) as an assistant professor of economics.
Dr. Nguyen’s area of research includes banking, finance, and corporate governance. As an applied theorist, he employs theoretical techniques from the field of industrial organization to study the designs, roles, and applications of regulation/supervision in the banking and financial sector, the interactions between regulation and risk-taking incentives of banks and financial companies, and the mechanism behind financial crises. He is also interested in the history of financial developments, particularly in the case of the United States, China and Vietnam.
Since 2017, Dr. Nguyen has also served as the team leader of the Economic Policy Group (EPG-AVSE Global) whose focus is to conduct in-depth research on new policy solutions to economic challenges in Vietnam.
